Obituary for Garth E. Coates

Garth E. Coates Sr., 97, of Oshkosh WI, passed peacefully on March 5th, 2021 at home, with his family by his side. He was born on October 11th, 1923 to Amber Rose and Mark Coates. Garth was a WWII veteran who served in the Aleutian Islands, Gilbert Islands, and the Marshall Islands earning him three bronze stars.

Garth worked as a carpenter with his father building houses in Oshkosh, a skilled trade he would later pass onto his sons. He worked for many years in the Chicago Painters Union as well. Garth was a man of very strong work ethic, and proudly did so his entire life. Even after retirement he never stopped to rest for very long. You could always find him fixing, building, or climbing something well into his 90s.

On October 10, 1950 Garth was united in marriage to Eunice Velie and together they raised nine children. Garth and Eunice always enjoyed family time. During the long winter breaks from carpentry Garth and Eunice would often take the nine children to Florida where they enjoyed spending time with grandparents. Garth also enjoyed taking his family camping and teaching them to cherish the simple things in life.

Garth is survived by his sons: David Coates, Garth Coates Jr., and Paul (Donna Mauk) Coates; daughters: Kim Coates-Mills, Kay (Tom) Bradley and Edith (Denise) Almond. He also has many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great, great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death are Eunice Coates; his parents, Amber and Mark Coates; brother, Howard (Alice) Block; sister, Edith (Ollie) Kinsler; sons: Mark Coates and Dennis Coates; daughter, JoAnne Bradley Weaver; and daughter-in-law, Marion Coates.

A visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 15, 2021 at the funeral home. Military Honors will follow.
