Obituary for James George Millerd

James (Jim) George Millerd passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, September 24th at Aurora Medical Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  His introduction to the world was on March 9,1941 in New London, Wisconsin to George and Ruth (Bruley) Millerd.

Jim graduated from Clintonville High School in 1959 and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.  He served in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1966-1968.  Throughout his life, Jim was a jack of many trades, from working as a tutor to moonlighting at pizza parlors; he most enduringly enjoyed tending to his patron’s beverage needs as a bartender at supper clubs in the area (most notably Hesser’s and Robbin’s in Oshkosh,) Jim was also owner and chief bartender of the Grand Bar in the late 70s.

Jim and Mary Jo Westover married in Oshkosh on October 3, 1975.  Their half century together brought them three children and myriad adventures as they relocated from Oshkosh to Las Vegas and Henderson, Nevada where they lived for over a decade, then testing out Sebring, Florida before returning home to Wisconsin for a brief stint in Clintonville before settling back down in Oshkosh to enjoy their retirement.

Jim “Animal” Millerd, was an avid baseball player most often found playing the position of catcher in a plethora of leagues throughout his life, and later coaching his son’s little league team.  He was also a rabid fan of all Wisconsin sports, particularly the Milwaukee Brewers which he passed on to his children.  A lifelong animal lover, Jim was rarely without a pet dog: from Tippy the lightning dog, to “Dyna”mite the stray he helped care for in Vietnam, to his last buddy, Max.  Jim was on an insatiable quest for knowledge, including a voracious love of trivia, particularly as a longstanding Jeopardy viewer and a competitive Trivial Pursuit player with his daughter during family holidays.

Jim is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Jo, their children Nicole (W. Jason Cuebas) Millerd of Oshkosh, Alex (JD Williams) Millerd of Oshkosh, Gorman (Christine) Millerd of Las Vegas, four grandchildren (Blayton, Alyssa, Addilyn, and Jaxon), brothers Bob, Dick, and Gary, sister Mary Millerd, and his oldest friend, Winn Zimmerman.   He is preceded in death by his parents George and Ruth and his brothers Keith and Dennis.

A special thanks to the team at Aurora ICU, particularly RNs Egbo, Allie, Carli, and Dr. Negatu who showed Jim and his family immense care and compassion during this difficult time.

Jim will live on forever in the hearts of his friends and loved ones.
