Obituary for David Fox Conover

David Fox Conover
David Fox Conover, 90, passed away peacefully with family at his side on March 2, 2018 at Evergreen Retirement Community in Oshkosh, Wis. He was born in Trenton, N.J. on Jan. 8, 1928 to Emily F. and Norman S. Conover. He served in WWII in the US Army. He earned a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Penn State University. David met his loving wife, Jean M. Conover, at Penn State, and they wed in 1950. He also earned a master’s degree at the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology at Iowa State University.

His early career in forestry took him to northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, until he and Jean and their children settled in Oshkosh, where David taught biology and conservation at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

In addition to his teaching, David was active in highway and riverfront beautification, environmental conservation, the Hmong community, Self Help for Hard of Hearing, and local Unitarian Universalist fellowships. He is described by family as a patient, good-natured, and modest man who treated everyone with kindness and respect. He loved nature, camping, skiing, and anything to do with water. David had a delightful, low-key sense of humor. He excelled at “name that tune,” he could produce a song for every occasion, and he could whistle. His legacy will continue through his family and through the countless students that he taught, advised, and mentored.

Survivors include his wife and partner in life’s adventures, Jean; his daughter, Elizabeth Conover (Steve Raybine); his son, Robert Conover (Julie Conover); daughter, Emily Conover (Patrick Craig); and his grandchildren, Alex Conover, Brian Conover, David Raybine, Kathryn Conover, and Samuel Raybine. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Anderson; nephews, David Anderson, Roger Anderson, Mark Anderson, David Alberts, and Daniel Alberts; and his nieces, Christine Conover, Debra Alberts Latherow, and Diane Alberts. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Fremont Conover. He is also survived by many other beloved relatives in his extended family.

The family wishes to thank the skilled and compassionate staff at Evergreen who went above and beyond in David’s care.

A celebration of David’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be directed to the Nature Conservancy at www.nature.org or the Evergreen Foundation at www.evergreenoshkosh.com.
