Obituary for Doris Genke

Doris Yvonne Genke, age 83, of Oshkosh, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2005 at Alterra Sterling House. She was born on November 17, 1921 in Marinette, the daughter of Leif and Edith (Peterson) Johnson. Doris married Robert “Bob” Genke on June 11, 1949 in Marinette, at First Methodist Church. She went to school at the Marinette County Normal School, University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point, and received her teaching degree at the University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh. Doris was a special education teacher for 40 years. She taught in the Marinette, Watertown and Oshkosh school districts. She loved gardening, reading, knitting and crafts but most of all, loved spending time with her grandchildren. Doris was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Oshkosh, and a strong supporter of the National Humane Society. Doris is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert “Bob” Genke, two daughters, Ann (Tom) Halverson of Appleton, Jan (Ron Schwarz) Genke of Memphis, TN, three grandchildren, Eric ( special friend Rachael Ingersoll) Halverson, of Kalamazoo, MI, Sarah Halverson of Phoenix, AZ, and Scott Halverson of Appleton, one brother, Robert (Jackie) Johnson, California, one sister, June (Paul) Schupert, Arizona, and is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Ralph Johnson, and one sister Luella Atwell. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, October 3, 2005 at First United Methodist Church in Oshkosh, at 5:30pm, with the Rev. Harry Naden officiating. Visitation will be held at church from 4:00pm until time of services. A Memorial in Doris’ name has been established. A special thanks to the nurses at Affinity Hospice, and staff at the Alterra Sterling House for their wonderful care and compassion.
