Obituary for Roger Westphal

Roger A. Westphal

This was a peaceful and gentle man. On March 11, 2008 Roger joined his heavenly Father to forever share in the peace of His Kingdom. Roger began his life journey on May 7, 1930 in Arco, Minnesota. He was proud of his first real job as a telegraph operator for the railroad and after service in the United States Army, he obtained his BBA from the University of Wisconsin Madison and years later, his MSE Guidance and Counseling from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. In those intervening years he worked diligently for the State of Wisconsin Banking Commission and then in the Personnel Office of Aid Association for Lutherans (Thrivent) for eleven years, but the best job was yet to come. In 1970 he joined the staff of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in the office of Career Planning and Placement and spent the next twenty-five years in a job he loved with his whole heart. To help the countless number of students that ventured in and out of his office was a privilege that would never tire him. During their almost twenty years together, Roger and his wife traveled this country and the world, cared for a menagerie of adopted pets and shared in their hobby of antiques collecting. He loved to play golf and one year, back in the 1980's, Roger, Ben Zalas and Dave Hochtritt packed their bags, tossed their clubs in the car and traveled south to do nothing but play golf. No hotel reservations, no reserve tee times and no plan. They had a grand time. Roger's survivors include his wife Jane, son Bradley (Dawn), Menasha, daughters Christine Augsburger, Susan (Greg) Vande Sande, and Jennifer Marty, all of Oshkosh. Grandchildren are Hannah (fiancee Mike Miller) Westphal, Oshkosh, Caitlin Busha, Oshkosh, Tyler Westphal, Menasha, Molly Westphal, Menasha, Andy Augsburger, Oshkosh, and great-grandson Carson Miller, Oshkosh, sister, Barbara Beers (and friend Roger Domine), Alexandria, MN,brother Bruce (Nancy) Owatonna, MN, brother-in-law and friend Jerry Gliniecki, Oshkosh, nieces and nephews and the dearest and oldest of friends, Martin and Phyllis Speidel, Oceanside, CA. A Memorial Service for Roger will be held on Friday March 14, 2008 at Trinity Episcopal Church at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Fr. Steven Powers officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Roger's name has been established at the Winnebago County Historical Society, 234 Church Avenue, Oshkosh
